About Us

Tim Barber was a recently retired businessman when his friend Millard Gamble invited him to All Children’s Hospital for a tour little more than five years ago. By the time he’d finished touring, Tim had already signed up to volunteer.

“I asked – what’s the toughest spot you’ve got for volunteers?” he recalls.  Following volunteer orientation, that’s exactly where he wound up – helping Child Life therapists on the second floor Hematology/Oncology Unit.

“I’ve always been a ‘glass half full’ kind of guy,” he explains. “But for the first few months, I’d wake up every Wednesday morning worried about what I’d face in my volunteer shift.”

It wasn’t long before this father of seven and self-described “kid nut” noticed a pattern in his Wednesday attitude.  “By the time I’d get to my car after the shift, I’d be smiling and laughing – thinking about the kids and parents that I hoped I’d been able to help. Now I wake up every Wednesday, thinking – YEAH! It’s my day at All Children’s!”

Through the years, Tim has connected with lots of young patients and their parents. Every Wednesday night, he’ll sit at the dinner table with his family and share stories  – about the tired mom taking a break while Tim sat with her daughter, or the little boy who’d turn a blanket on his patient room floor into a mat where he and Tim could stage matches between his wrestling figure toys.

“He didn’t make it,” Tim says softly. “I’d tell my kids these stories – and they’d cry, sometimes laugh. But always, I made sure they remembered how blessed we are.”

That reminder is a message Tim will bring to his role as Chair of the All Children’s Hospital Foundation Board.

“I spent 25 years on the other side of the fence – as a third-party insurance administrator, handling employee medical claims and making sure billing was fair and accurate.  I’ve always known what a world-class institution we have in All Children’s Hospital.

“It’s a privilege and an honor to be part of an institution where every single day, outstanding medical work helps to heal such sick and injured children. We have extremely talented health care providers devoted to caring for kids. But on this team, there’s room for more.

“Our community is helping to build a brand new children’s hospital, where we will be able to change even more lives.  WOW! What an incredible opportunity for each of us to remember the blessings we have in our lives – and to share them with generations to come.”
